SARAID has launched a new arm to the charity, the Avon Community Resilience Team (CRT). Utilising the specialist skills and training the team has obtained from its international deployments the CRT will be applying them in their local communities.
The Avon CRT is a team of volunteers based in North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, their aim is to identify communities and people and make them less venerable and more resilient to disasters, taking a little of the load off the blue light services.
Working in partnership with both Avon and Somerset Police and Avon Fire and Rescue, the team are based at Nailsea Fire Station. Running a six month rolling syllabus, anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join at any time. Training includes crime prevention, fire awareness, navigation skills, first aid and much more.
SARAID are also creating a flood response team to support communities in the Somerset Levels and further afield. Once fully trained and accredited, the flood response team will be listed on the DEFRA national database, so could be deployed anywhere in the country.
